Cleansing: Myths and Truths

How many of you were successful with your New Year’s resolutions? According to the University of Scranton, only about 8% of people successfully complete the goals they set out for themselves. So, what about the rest of us? Well, I have good news! If one of your goals was to get healthy or eat healthier, you are in luck! I will be offering a wonderful 5 Day Cleanse program for anyone who would like to make that first step to a healthier lifestyle.

What is a cleanse and why would anyone need to do one? There are many myths that surround the whole cleanse/detox process such as toxins are not real or our bodies are designed to handle anything we throw at them. Or even we just excrete whatever we don’t need. Let’s examine each of these myths a little more closely.

Cleanse Myths:

1. Toxins are not real. This is a big myth. There are so many different toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Pollution, pesticides, medications, plastics, body lotions, antibiotics, herbicides, artificial chemicals, food dyes, and processed foods, just to name a few. As these toxins slowly build up in the body, they get deposited into your fat cells which makes it extremely difficult for you to excrete them. Once your cells are somewhat compromised, they may stop working as efficiently as they should. What can happen? Weight gain, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, aches and pains, low energy and more. Getting rid of toxins can do wonderful things for your health.

2. Our bodes are designed to handle anything we throw at them. Yes, we do have wonderful detoxifying organs such as the liver and the kidneys. We have a wonderfully efficient lymphatic system. Our skin does a great job at sweating. However, since most people are micronutrient deficient, these organs don’t receive the nutrients required for optimal function - especially when you consider how many toxins you are exposed to. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, “Oxidative stress is the total burden placed on organisms by the constant production of free radicals in the normal course of metabolism plus whatever other pressures the environment brings to bear (natural and artificial radiation, toxins in air, food and water; and miscellaneous sources of oxidizing activity, such as tobacco smoke).” Oxidative stress can lead to free radicals which can then lead to damaged cells. That can bring disease and illness.

3. We excrete whatever we don’t need. The body doesn’t allow toxins to circulate freely because it would create negative health reactions. So, therefore, the toxins are stored in fat cells to keep them “out of the way.” Once they are stored in fat cells, they must be transformed into a different form so that they can be properly excreted. You may have heard that people must drink a lot of water when they are doing a cleanse and that is absolutely true. Once those toxins are released from the fat cells, they must be eliminated quickly. If not, you can experience negative side effects such as nausea, headache or rash. Not to worry, drinking water and eating lots of fiber is usually the best way to prevent that from happening.

This is why I like to host a Winter Cleanse every year! Winter is a time for fresh starts and new choices. Walking away from the sugary snacks and party food of December and moving toward nurturing and nourishing foods. This time of year is a natural time to engage in a cleanse - start to rid the body of stored toxins, ditch harmful habits and cravings, and focus on a healthier lifestyle.

My 5-Day Winter Cleanse will begin on Monday, January 28, with a pre-cleanse phone call on Friday, January 25. I will host two phone calls - one pre cleanse (on the 25th) and one post cleanse - to make sure you have all of the information you will need to engage in a successful program. The two calls will be via Zoom, the 5-Day program will be run online via a private Facebook group and daily emails.
